Course Description
Sacred
Sites in Greece was a six-credit, Study Abroad course. The course traced
the shift over several centuries of several varieties of religious worship,
including goddess worship and Christianity, in the Greek world.
Students focused on understanding sacred sites such as Delphi,
Olympia, and Epidaurus within their archaeological, economic, historical,
military, and social context.
Eighteen students took this course, even after 9/11. This year, we added a trip to Crete and Santorini. Seeing the Palace of Minos on Crete and Akrotiri, the Greek Pompeii, on Santorini were new experiences. A freak snowstorm dumped a foot of snow on Athens, fortunately while we were in the provinces, but we did see snow in places where we never expected to see the white stuff. Just like last year, we drove to the entrance to Hades again, but this time it was frozen over. Seeing students present their research through chattering teeth is one reason we decided to bite the bullet on costs and move the course to early summer. More daylight and less snow might offset the higher expenses!
