Scholar Program Presents Physician, Author and Theatre/Opera Director
British-born Jonathan Miller has a career that has spanned diverse fields of study. He is a physician, author, lecturer, television producer and director of theatre, film and opera. The son of a distinguished child psychiatrist, Miller was educated at St. Paul’s School, studied natural sciences at St. John’s College of Cambridge and qualified as a doctor of medicine in 1959. Cambridge University awarded him the honorary title Doctor of Letters in 1996; and in 1997, he was elected as a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians in London. At St. John’s, Miller appeared as a member of the Cambridge Footlights and later accepted an invitation to co-author and appear in Beyond the Fringe with Alan Bennett, Peter Cook and Dudley Moore. The legendary satire opened at the Edinburgh Festival in 1960 and later moved to London and New York. His stage career has included many well-known productions, including The Merchant of Venice with Sir Lawrence Olivier. During the 1988-1990 seasons, he was artistic director at the Old Vic. His most recent production was A Midsummer Night’s Dream for the Almeida Theatre. In the mid-seventies, Miller was invited to direct the British premiere of Alexander Goehr’s opera, Arden Must Die. Since then, he has worked closely with the Kent Opera and the English National Opera where he has directed such works as The Mikado, The Marriage of Figaro, and Carmen. He has also worked at many of the world’s leading opera houses including La Scala in Milan, The Metropolitan in New York and the Royal Opera House in Covent Garden where he directed Cosi fan Tuttiwith costumes by Giorgio Armani. In addition to his success in theatre and opera, Miller has also contributed prolifically to BBC and independent television. From 1980-1982, he produced and directed 11 plays for the BBC’s Shakespeare series and he has also written and produced several major health series that include The Body in Question, States of Mind and Born Talking. In 1998 Miller curated a major exhibition at the National Gallery in London, entitled Mirror Image, which explores the pictorial representation of reflection.
