I‘m Dr. Fred Shaffer, Professor of Psychology, at Truman State University. I earned a BA in Psychology and Political Science with a minor in Philosophy/Religion from Claremont Men's College (1971). I completed a MS in Clinical Psychology (1973) and a PhD in Social-Personality Psychology from Oklahoma State University (1975). I received the Doris and Walker Allen Fellowship for Faculty Excellence in 2008. My teaching philosophy is to respect and care about my students, share my excitement for learning, and prepare them for the demands of life outside of the classroom. My interest areas include Physiological Psychology and Applied Psychophysiology and I am certified in General Biofeedback by the Biofeedback Certification Institute of America (BCIA). I teach PSYC 334 Applied Psychophysiology, which covers the BCIA General Biofeedback didactic learning objectives for certification. My specialty areas are heart rate variability (HRV) and respiration. I am chair-elect of the BCIA Board. I’ve served on the Association for Applied Psychophysiology and Biofeedback’s (AAPB) Board and chaired its Program Committee from 2007-2008. I am a contributing editor for Biofeedback and a member of the editorial board of Applied Psychophysiology and Biofeedback.

I teach PSYC 598 Crisis Intervention workshop (3 credit hours) during the Winter (December 13-16, 2008) and Spring (May 9-12, 2009) interims.
 

Summer Classes

This summer I will teach PSYC 166 General Psychology, PSYC 266 Experimental Psychology, PSYC 321 Physiological Psychology, and PSYC 430 Psychopharmacology online from June 1 - July 24, 2009. I've designed these classes so that you will not have to return to campus and so that you may work ahead. Each class features weekly emails from me and mp3 lectures.


Undergraduate Research Team

In Spring 2006, my research team won the Thought Technology Ltd. Research Award for Best Student Paper at the Portland AAPB Annual Meeting. In Spring 2007, we received a Citation Award for an oral presentation at the Monterey AAPB meeting. This year we will study the optimal session length for temperature training.
