  Sequence of Activities

  • In analyzing the perpetrators’ nonverbal sexual initiatives, the sequence of activities may vary, but individual components are essentially the same, namely kissing, fondling, taking clothes off, carrying or laying the victim down, and sexual intercourse.  Thus, you can see the pattern and also obtain a more vivid impression of the date rapists, based on their behavior and underlying personal judgments.

Interviewee 1 recollected about the sexual assault he initiated:

I started kissing her, and she said, “No,” and she used her hands to push me away.  I kept on kissing her.  I grabbed her.  I grabbed her ankles, pulled her down, took her panties off...And I kept on kissing her.  Then, after I started kissing her, I had sex with her.  I forced her to have sex.

Interviewee 2 described a similar date rape scenario:

I took my shoes off and laid on the bed and did one of these [patting sound].  And we started kissin' and makin' out.  I laid her down.  I just took her shoulders and laid her down.  I unbuttoned her blouse, took her blouse off, took my pants off, took her dress off, took her slip....I took my pants off, pulled the covers back, and we had sex.

  Illustrations of Disproval

  • The next several instances give the reader a sense that the female victim was in disapproval of the perpetrators’ aggressions.  However, this rejection element will be illustrated in greater detail later.

Interviewee 8 described his date rape event this way:

It was kind of like--as soon as we got in the back seat we just got together.  I probably initiated the kissing, because as far as I knew--shit, why else would she get into the back seat of a car?  Well, we got clothes off and everything and were kissin' and everything and then I go to go in and she's like, "No!"  So I'm layin' on top of her, kissin' her passionately, I guess, or whatever you are.  Then I got ready to penetrate her and she's…refusing me.  I said, “It's too late now"…and I went ahead and penetrated her.

The next assailant showed how he included verbal coercion along with physical aggression.  Interviewee 12 stated:

So, I’m tryin’ to get her in the mood.  So, I go in the kitchen again.  This time, I’m rubbin’ on her breasts.  So, she didn’t move me back or nothin’.  Anything like that.  So, I was sayin’ “Okay, step one completed.  Step two, you know, how am I gonna do it?  She’s settin’ over there with her back up...Am I gonna pull her legs down, pull her down, pull her legs to the side, or anything like that?”  So, I decided to go ahead and get on the bed and sit up with her.  So, I get on the bed; I sit up with her.  And I’m rubbin’ on her and everything.  And kissin’ her and everything.  So, she scoots down for me.  So, I get on top of her.  We, what they call that, make out for awhile.  Then, we start grindin’ on each other.  Okay.  We were grindin’ for awhile.  I said, “What's up? Do you wanna do this or not?”  Yeah, aggressive tone.  One of the reasons why I asked her “What's up? Do you wanna do this or not?” was because she had on some tight jeans.  And, the only way they was gonna come off is if she took them off.  I cannot get them tight jeans off.  So, I get off, and I take off my shirt and everything.  She gets off, and she just takes off her pants.  She left her shirt on.  So, I pulled my pants down, took them off and everything.  So, we had sex, and everything.  And, while we’re having sex, she was...I’d just say, I was makin’ her get into it.  Because I was having aggressive sex.  You know, tryin’ to hit it hard, flippin’ her over, different positions, things like that.  Maybe that was the only thing makin’ her get into it.  But she still wasn’t fully into it, like she was enjoyin’ everything.

Nonverbal Sexual Initiatives Combined with Physical Assault

  • A final example of the perpetrators’ nonverbal sexual initiatives includes the primary components described earlier, but this reflection incorporates even more physical assault.  Interviewee 18 recollected:

I started fondling her.  Fondling her breasts again.  Kissin' on the back of her neck.  Put my hand down her underwear.  Digitally manipulated her clitoris.  I rolled her over on her back, gettin' ready to insert it.  She said “No” and told me she had a tampon in.  I reached down and I pulled the tampon out and went about havin' sex--put it in.  She's now saying nothing.  So, I was doin my thing.  It was rough.  There was nothin; there was no love-makin'.

  • This transcript excerpt graphically illustrated the heartlessness of a date rapist.
  • As I continue to profile an image of this type of sex offender, there is a logical correlation to other factors that have been explored, namely contextual considerations--perpetrators’ perspectives, self-centeredness, and aversion to long-term relationships--as well as other contextual considerations, such as socialization, masculinity, control, and peer pressure.
  • Many of these elements are apparent when one examines the above-described verbal and nonverbal sexual initiatives utilized by date rapists.
