Announcements

Date Item
4/21 Requirements for the presentation of your Water Analysis Results.
3/31 One more schedule revision.
3/25 Here is a solution to the oxalic acid problem we used for bonus.  Also, here is the solution to the ammonia equilibrium problem.
3/23 As you complete the Molecular Models 2 lab, use this list to ensure that you have performed all of the necessary calculations and collected the appropriate data.
3/18 Class data for the Coordination Compounds experiment.  If your group's data is not included, please e-mail it to me.
3/3 Here's a list of the "big picture" topics for Exam 2.
2/17 As I have been thinking about our topics this semester, it appears that we would benefit from a slight change in order of some of the topics.  Therefore, I plan to rearrange the topics as follows:  Our discussion of "Structure, Reactivity, and Acid-Base Chemistry" will be moved so that it follows the "Equilibrium Review".  The main impact is that the "IM Forces, Liquids and Solids" and "Solutions and Their Properties" topics will be moved forward and covered on Exam 2, while "Structure, Reactivity, and Acid-Base Chemistry" will now be covered with the Exam 3 material.  The topics seem to mesh better this way.  I have adjusted our "Anticipated Schedule" accordingly.  Please note that only the topic order has changed, exam dates have not changed.
2/16 Quiz 5 was distributed in class and is due at the beginning of class on Friday (2/20).  To aid your search for structures and properties, you might try the following links:
  • ChemID Plus Advanced from the National Library of Medicine at NIH
  • ChemSpider
  • ChemFinder
  • The NIST Data Gateway.  A great deal of information, but requires a little more navigation.
  • The Merck Index is a good hardcopy database.  It is available in both the reference section and in the stacks at Pickler Library.

Of course, "Googling" your compound will also provide links to a variety of information.

2/4 Here's a list of the "big picture" topics for Exam 1.
2/4 If you are looking for a way to check you work when drawing Lewis Structures, a first attempt would be to Google "lewis structure" and include the name or formula for the species you are interested in.  For example you could find several sites dealing with LS of CO2 by searching for "lewis structure co2" or "lewis structure carbon dioxide".
1/28 For the Molecular Models 1 lab, we will modify the procedure slightly as described in the document I handed out today.  The tables and questions to be completed are linked below.  The procedure and more information is available at chemlab.truman.edu.

Group A: Simple Lewis Dot Structures
Group B: Resonance
Group C: Expanded Octet
Group D: Radicals and Electron Deficient Species
Group E: Expanded Octet and Resonance
Group F: Organic Functional Groups
Group G: Isomers
Group H: Symmetry
Questions to answer after the experiment.

If you have the document I handed out today, there is no need to print the files linked above.  Should you misplace the document, you can print new pages as necessary.

1/26 Orbital shapes homework.  Due in class Wednesday, Jan. 28.  Use your text and/or websites like the Orbitron to complete the assignment.  10 points.  Here is a solutions key (posted 1/28)
1/13 Learn some interesting chemistry and earn some extra credit!
Here's how.
1/13 Have questions?  Need extra help?  You have several resources available:

1.  Come and see me!  I have office hours posted on my schedule or will make an appointment with you!
2.  Visit the Chemistry Contact Center.  It is staffed by chemistry faculty who are there to help.
3.  Visit AXE tutoring.  AXE offers free, walk in tutoring Sunday through Thursday nights from 7:00-9:00 in MG2003.

1/12 Lab Paperwork:  Before noon on Friday, January 16, you must complete several items (Safety Contract, Policies Contract, Safety Quiz, and Health Form).  All of these items are available on a special Blackboard course entitled: "SP09:CHEM121 Chem Principles II Combined".  Please sign in to Blackboard, go to this course and follow the instructions to complete the paperwork.  Even if you completed the paperwork for CHEM 120, you must do it again for CHEM 121.
1/8 A lecture "outline" for our first topic, "Atomic Structure and Quantum Theory" is now available on the "Handouts" page.
1/7 A draft of the syllabus is now available by clicking on the "syllabus" link to the left.  The final version will be distributed in class.
12/15 Textbook shopping?  We'll be using "General Chemistry" 9th edition, by Pertrucci, Harwood, Herring and Madura. We used this book for the last years so there are several used copies available.
