General sources (all subjects)

Academic Search Elite (EBSCO).  1985+.  A multi-disciplinary database that indexes over 3000 periodicals, many scholarly journals and some popular magazines.  Includes full text of about 2000 of the periodicals.  You can limit your search to find only scholarly, peer-reviewed journals. Be careful to only use scholarly journals.
 

ArticleFirst.  Database of scanned tables of contents from about 13,000
    periodical titles since 1990.  Includes both popular and scholarly periodicals.
        

Dissertation Abstracts.  Index to dissertations from 1861.  The actual
    dissertations  may sometimes be obtained through interlibrary loan.

Humanities Abstracts.  1984+
Citations from about 325 periodicals in archaeology and
classical studies, area studies, folklore, history, performing and visual arts, philosophy, religion and theology, language and literature.

ABC-CLIO History Databases

America: History & Life.    1964+    Historical coverage of the United States and Canada from  prehistory to the present.

JSTOR. Archive of scholarly journals. Includes journals in Art & Art History

RILA:  International Repertory of the Literature of Art.  1978-1989.

Arts & Humanities Search.  1980+  International multidisciplinary
   database indexing 1,300 of the world's leading arts and humanities journals.

 

Primary Sources

Speeches, letters, journals, diaries, etc. of an individual may be found by looking for the name of that person as an author.  In the Library Catalog for example:        

The word sources or documents or documentary usually occur on records for anthologies or collections of primary source material.  Use those words in a keyword search to bring up collections of documents.

      art and history and (sources or document*)

      art and s:sources         The s:  limits the term sources to the subject field.

      s:sources and impressionism
 

Use the Library Catalog to find these in our library.  Use MOBIUS or WorldCat  to see what other volumes might exist that you could borrow. 

Finding articles from 19th and early 20th Century publications:
 
 Index to 19th Century American Art Periodicals. About 40 American Art periodicals that were published during the 19th century are included in this two volume set. Pickler does not have many holdings of the titles indexed, but interlibrary loan is always an option.
