Graph Evaluation Rubric

Graphs will always be worth 5 points.  I will holistically assign a score on how well a graph meets the criteria given below.  A score of 5 will be assigned to a graph that meets most, if not all, of the criteria, while scores of 1 to 4 will be assigned based on how many of the criteria are met.  A score of 0 will be given when a required graph is not present.  For more information on graph preparation see ChemLab.truman.

A graph that receives a score of 5 will have most, or all, of the following characteristics

Clear and easily understandable

No grid lines

No colored background

Both axes are properly labeled, which includes the quantity appearing on the axis and its units

Proper significant figures on the axis tick marks

Proper scaling on both axes

A descriptive title that allows a reader to easily understand what the graph shows (notebook only, it is replaced by a figure caption in a laboratory report)

Properly used legend

Equation displayed on graph (only required in the notebook, should not be present in graphs presented in a laboratory report)

Appropriate fonts

Proper use of symbols and lines
