On November 15, 2003 I competed in the Shocker Challenge Strongman Contest.  I competed in the over Middleweight division and placed second out of four competitors.  I completed all the events, set several personal bests, and had a good time.  Scott Tully put on a very nice show.

The first event was Conan's Wheel with 550 lbs.  I placed second in this event with a walk of 57 feet.  This was only the second time I've done this event, so I was pretty happy with the improvement, although I think I could have gone farther if the weight hadn't been swinging when I took off.

The second event was Deadlift Max on a 2" barbell.  I made a training mistake on this event because I didn't have any idea what my deadlift max was.  I ended with a pull of 460 lbs (shown above)., but I could have done more weight.  My pull was only good enough for third place on this event.

The third event was a "log" press for reps.  The  weight was 200 lbs., and I did 10 reps (although my first rep didn't count because I didn't look through at the ref).  I was only shooting for 5 or 6, so I was very pleased with the outcome here.   9 Reps was good enough for second place in this event.

The fourth event was a Farmer's Hold with 250 lbs. in each hand.  I did okay on this event with a hold of 45 seconds (good enough for third place).

The fifth event and final event was the loading medly.  We loaded three atlas stoned (190, 210, and 230 lbs.) and three kegs (160, 275, and 300 lbs.).  Medlies tend to be my best events and this was no exception.  I put up a respectable time of 26 seconds.   In the picture above, I'm loading the last keg (300 lbs.).  Below, you'll find some pictures of some of the other competitors that were at this show.  These competitors all live in or around the Kansas City area.

Eric Todd in the Log Press with 225.  I think he did around 15 reps.
