One of the strengths of the physics and pre-engineering programs at
Truman is the close interaction between faculty and students. Classes are
small: introductory physics classes range from 20 to 70 students; advanced
classes range from five to 15 students. Faculty are regularly available
for help outside of class. Faculty and students work together closely on
research projects and often travel together to professional meetings.
Along with rigorous training in physics and mathematics, we provide our
graduates with experience in the use of word-processors, spreadsheets,
and mathematics and programming software. In addition, they are expected
to be able to work collaboratively, and to possess excellent written and
oral communication skills. Our curricula reflect these expectations.
The Truman State University Physics Department offers three different academic
programs:
The Pre-engineering
Program consists of two years at Truman taking the Physics and Math groundwork
for engineering, after which the student transfers to an Engineering School
such as the University of Missouri at Rolla.
The Bachelor
of Science in Physics is a designed for those students who definitely
want to go on to graduate study in Physics.
The Bachelor
of Arts in Physics is designed for those students who want an undergraduate
degree in Physics, but will not necessarily do graduate work in Physics.
The BA in Physics is no less rigorous than the BS, but it allows for more
flexibility so that the student can focus on other areas.
