ENG 238

INTRODUCTION TO LINGUISTICS

PROJECTS

This project is a large undertaking, putting to use all the knowledge/skills acquired in this course. You will probably spend 1-2 hours EVERY WEEK on this project. Both the professor and the student tutor are available to answer questions and provide assistance during their regularly scheduled office hours.

Conduct a 20-minute interview (in which the interviewee does almost all of the speaking) about the topic(s) of your choice.

Make at least one copy of your tape recording (the library has dubbing facilities). Keep your master copy in a safe place, and do all your work from the dubbed copy.

Transcribe the entire interview in "standard" written American English. Discuss any problems you had doing so. (Recording problems, simultaneous speech, incomplete sentences & ideas, etc.)

With every unit we cover in class, you will be given questions to answer about your subject. For instance, when we cover phonetics, you will be asked to do a narrow transcription of a one-minute chunk of the interview and to discuss any speech errors (false starts or slips of the tongue). This page will be updated as the questions related to each unit are handed out.
