What does Greek and modern mathematics have to do with tuning musical instruments? The scale we are used to is a compromise developed over centuries of experimentation and mathematics. The ancient, baroque, romantic, and modern eras have each dealt with this problem differently, based on the mathematics (and aestetic sensibilities) available at the time. Examples of different tuning systems will be played for comparison to modern tuning methods. Plus, you can hear a statistics professor play the piano, and some other guests play as well. No Mathematical knowledge is required for this talk, aside from a basic knowledge of fractions.
