Greetings.  I teach American history at a public liberal arts institution in northeastern Missouri.  Courses I teach frequently include American history surveys, Frontier and West in American History, The Western Film (aka John Wayne 101), Women in American History, and The History of Sexuality in America.  I also teach Senior Seminar, various graduate classes, Amish history and culture, and another film and history course called James Bond and the Twentieth Century.

My research focus is Amish history and culture.  My revised dissertation was published as The Amish on the Iowa Prairie, 1840-1910 by The Johns Hopkins University Press in 2000.  This book received the Outstanding Publication Award from the Communal Studies Association in 2002.  I co-edited a collection of essays on Anabaptist, Amish, and Mennonite women's history, Strangers at Home:  Amish and Mennonite Women in History, published by The Johns Hopkins University Press in February 2002.

Study Abroad courses have become a passion since 1997.  I have taught, alone and with colleagues, over 160 students in twelve classes of three weeks or more in Germany, Greece, Italy, the Czech Republic, Curaçao and Barbados.  In fact, I am leading "Sacred Sites in Greece" in May-June 2010.  If you would like more information about this six-hour course, CLICK HERE or email sdr@truman.edu.

I enjoy working with H-Net, the Humanities Network.  I was an online editor for H-Women, a listserv discussion group for women's history, for seven years, and serve as faculty mentor for student editors of H-HistMajor, a list for undergraduate history majors.  I am a member of the H-Net International Committee, and there is much discussion about internationalizing H-Net and the historical profession as a whole.
