Athens, Delphi, Corinth, plus Pella and Vergina (Alexander the Great Territory), Mount Olympus

Course Description
Sacred Sites in Greece was a six-credit, Study Abroad course.  The course traces the shifts over several centuries among several varieties of religious worship, including goddess worship and Christianity, in the Greek world.  Students focus on understanding sacred sites such as Delphi, Corinth, and Epidaurus within their archaeological, economic, historical, military, and social context.

Previous editions of our Study Abroad courses in Greece took place during winter break in 2000-2001 and 2001-2002, and May-June 2003, May-June 2005, June 2006, May 2007, and May-June 2010.

Comments from previous students

I'm graduating this spring and out of the four years here this trip was the best thing I did and I will always remember it.  Thanks a lot for the experience!

This course was a once in a lifetime opportunity.  Even if the student is not in a history field, one learns so much about people on the trip.  The sites themselves were truly awe-inspiring.  One feels privileged to be a visitor at these great historic landmarks.

This class is a great experience that is well worth the time, effort, and money involved.  Don’t stress out too much about what to pack or how you’re going to manage living in another culture--just enjoy the trip and keep an open mind.  You’ll be surprised by how much you learn.

Delphi was by far the most incredible place we went to.  Everything about it was magnificent.  The mountains and the sea came together perfectly and the site was perched in the middle of everything that was good.

To see something as important and huge as the Parthenon in person was an amazing experience.  It was hard to believe we were standing right in front of a place that historically significant--and that old.

Studying Abroad is a matter of Life and Death:  Study Abroad and Live or stay in Kirksville and Die!

Priceless.  This experience has changed my life.

I feel truly blessed and am very grateful to have had this amazing opportunity.  I would really like to see and help in any way possible anybody who is interested in studying abroad and parting with a few comforts of the U.S. to do so!  Even those who do not know or have no desire to travel abroad should definitely do it - it is definitely an amazing and eye-opening experience!

Worth every penny plus some.

You cannot be a truly educated person until you are aware of other cultures and the only way to attempt to understand another culture is to immerse yourself in it.

This is an experience of a lifetime.  I cannot express the value of being present at these places where ancient people whose names have survived throughout history once walked.  Studying abroad you become immersed in the culture and see things from a completely different perspective.  It's important to step out of your comfort zone every once in awhile, because that is when great things happen; it is when you truly see yourself grow.

Studying abroad is one of the best things I have ever done and I feel so blessed to have had this opportunity to travel and be a part of this journey!  It creates this desire to know so much about the history of all the past civilizations and how we got to where we are today. Any expectation I had has been exceeded - and I have truly changed in such positive and exciting ways.

This has been, above all things, an experience of a lifetime.  Not everyone gets the opportunity to study abroad and it is an abundance of new worldly knowledge that one can't find just studying at home.

There are a million and one values to studying abroad, but I think the most important aspect is stepping outside of one's comfortable Christian-America box into the vast world.  Also, what you experience studying abroad could never be expressed in a textbook.
