Call Number Formats in GUIcat

  1. A call number must be added to each item record.
  2. Use the following fields for call numbers:
    LC call numbers 050
    Dewey call numbers 082
    Sudocs/Modocs call numbers 086
    Local call numbers 099
III does not recognize 090 as a call number. Do not use it.
  3. Use no punctuation other than decimals (and, in the case of government documents, a colon).
  4. Be sure all letters are entered in upper case.
  5. Do not interchange O (letter) and 0 (numeral) or l (letter) and 1 (numeral)
  6. Volume designation appears separate from the call number in the VOLUME field. Check previous volumes to maintain consistency in naming the volume designation.
  7. In the VOLUME field, use a hyphen to indicate inclusive years or volumes and only to indicate inclusive years or volumes. Do not insert a space after a hyphen: v.1-5 or 1986-87 but not 1st- 4th sess.
