Tom Capuano's Home Page

Welcome! This page is intended for colleagues, friends, students and research assistants who may be interested in the links I offer below. The first is an image from a manuscript in the library at El Escorial. The manuscript presents a miscellany of medical recipes, but the link, fol. 213v, contains an incantation/prayer for someone who has been bitten by a rabid dog. The second link takes you to my transcription and translation of this incantation. The third link is my translation of the famous poem by St. John of the Cross, "Dark Night of the Soul."  The next two links are for my colleagues in paleography who might want to help us decipher a word from Aritmetica practica, a brief treatise on arithmetic found in Biblioteca Nacional Madrid MS 10.106. The mystery word, an abbreviation, is highlighted in yellow. The only thing that has occurred to us is the Catalan word preu for 'price,' but we are on very unsure footing! Below that is my transcription of the Sumario by Diego Gutiérrez de Salinas, which gives agronomic advice for 16th-17th century Spain. In case you didn't know, a facsimile of the 1777 ed. was published not that long ago (Urueña: Librería Alcaraván, 1995)
